Why do we roll to the 'Right' side before exiting out of Corpse Pose (Shavasana) ?
Rolling to the right side after Shavasana is a traditional practice in yoga!
We roll to the right side after Shavasana due to several physiological and energetic reasons:
1. Supports the Heart and Circulatory System
The heart is on the left side of the body. Rolling to the right keeps the heart above the lungs, allowing a gentle transition for blood circulation and preventing a sudden rush of blood to the head when sitting up.
2. Aids in Digestion
The stomach and intestines naturally curve toward the left. By rolling to the right, you avoid compressing the stomach and support digestion.
3. Balances Energy (Nadis in Yoga)
According to yogic philosophy, the body has energy channels (nadis):
The Ida Nadi (left side) is associated with calmness and relaxation.
The Pingala Nadi (right side) is linked to action and energy.
Rolling to the right activates the Pingala Nadi, helping you transition from deep relaxation to wakefulness smoothly.
4. Protects the Spine
This method allows a gentle rise, reducing strain on the spine and lower back, making it safer than sitting up suddenly.
5. Symbolism of New Beginnings
In some cultures, the right side is considered auspicious and represents positivity and a fresh start.
By rolling to the right, we honor the body’s natural rhythms and transition mindfully and gently from rest to activity.
